About This Course: Being one of the key social units, the family has changed significantly over time around the globe. While Confucian ethics governed traditional Chinese families for a long time, Chinese families today are also shaped by state policies, modernization, and globalization process. This course aims to introduce you to family values and practices around parenting, marriage, reproduction, and intergenerational care in Chinese societies, especially in modern times. It also contextualizes family values and practices and their transitions within broader demographic, social, and cultural changes in both Chinese and global settings. By engaging with cultural artifacts or scholarly work on Chinese families, and reflecting on your own experiences, observations, and beliefs about Chinese families, you will develop a nuanced way of understanding and analyzing family-related issues in the Chinese and global contexts.
